When New Year’s resolution lists are made, we all feel the need to maintain our physical health and get organized. We set up lists of goals, get started, and by February we are back to the same old routine. What if I told you that getting your life insurance in order should be number one on your resolution list?
Here’s why. If you are in good health, life insurance is something you can do quickly and affordably. If you smoke or are not in shape, life insurance is harder to get but it can be the impetus you need to achieve those goals. Many resolutions also have to do with money: getting a budget together, saving money, etc. Life Insurance protects your loved ones against the loss of your income and often is much more affordable than you might imagine.
Procrastination and lack of motivation are factors to why resolutions often fail, but much of procrastination is the fear of not knowing what to do. Maybe you don’t know how much life insurance to get… or maybe the thought is too morbid. But isn’t the thought of leaving your loved ones without the resources they need even worse? Now is the perfect time to get that in order and have peace of mind.
The reason to have life insurance is pretty simple: If you have an income, there are probably bills that need to be paid and people that are being cared for and supported by your income. Since 100% of us face death at some point and don’t know exactly when that will occur, it makes sense to get things in order now. [See my previous post Why Do I need Life Insurance?]
But how does it work? If something happens that results in your death, the insurance company pays a pre-determined amount of money to your loved ones. Besides burial costs, you need to consider how your dependents will account for the loss of your income. Maybe the house will need to be paid off or there are kids in the picture that have special needs. An insurance settlement would help with those needs or be invested to be used later as needed for replacement of your income.
The application process is fairly quick and easy. I have written about how to determine how much life insurance you need to consider in a previous article. If you are in good health, you will probably be shocked at how affordable it is. You will also be glad to finally get that item checked off your to-do list and have peace of mind about the protection of your loved ones.
