Why do I sell insurance?  What makes me different?  Here are some thoughts.

Why I do it
I never imagined that I would enjoy the insurance business.  What I did know when I started was that I liked helping people, solving problems, being independent, and working close to where I live.  As it turns out, insurance has been a great choice.  Over the years I have also seen how important it is to help people make the right choices.  It’s really rewarding.

Price is important but Value matters more
When I meet with a potential client, I search out the best plan for them.  Then I search out the lowest price for that plan. My intention is to make sure they have the right protection but not spend so much money that it is painful every month.  Often there are parts to their current insurance that aren’t needed or there is another similar product available at a better price.

How I end up saving people money
Many agents work for a company and are limited to selling products from just that company.  Your auto and homeowner’s insurance agent probably sells a health policy or a life policy of some sort, but it is most likely a product from the agent’s company.  What I do is seek out the best products and then sell them independently.  One life insurance company might be perfect for one client and not so great for the next client.  Because I have so many choices, I know which ones are the best for each individual client and can find the best price.

Long Term Thinking
I want long-term clients so I refuse to sell products that I don’t believe in, or from companies without a good track-record.  Many agents sell products based on the commissions.  While I also work for a commission, my focus is on helping.  Many of my clients are people I talk to on a regular basis, and I want to make sure they are happy and protected.  I will not sell a bad product because of a high commission.  It’s not worth it if it’s going to make my client unhappy or unprotected.

How I am different than most agents
I specialize.  Many agents sell all kinds of products – auto, health, life, renter’s, homeowner’s..etc.  I stick to insuring people and not property.  This allows me to focus.  Also I love the education part of what I do, showing people what is good and what is not good about their policy.  I spend a lot of time telling people NOT to buy from me, because what they have is already good or because I don’t think they need something different.  I am willing to advise for free, even when I know I am not going to sell –  I just like to help.  Lastly, I try to provide the best service I can.

Well, you certainly did a great job for us–and you are very helpful. This is the kind of blog post I encourage independent business owners to write … I’ll pass it on!
